MSSI Electrical launches Product Safety Guides to help combat non-compliant electrical installation products
9 April 2025 - MSSI Electrical, the CECAPI initiative focused on supporting the electrical installation industry and local authorities to ensure compliant and safe electrical installation products, welcomed Mr. Petar Parushev, DG JUST, and Ms. Vanessa Polillo, DG GROW, of the EU Commission, to the Orgalim office in Brussels to launch a comprehensive set of Product Safety Guides. Aimed towards economic operators throughout the supply chain, and local authorities, the guides help to identify potentially unsafe non-compliant electrical installation products.
The Product Safety Guides are designed to provide clear, practical, and actionable guidelines to help importers, resellers, installers, and local authorities to ensure that only safe and compliant electrical installation products are sold and used. Covering six safety critical products, the guides help users to understand the functionality, applicable standards, safety critical characteristics, product markings, and indicators for non-conformance for each product. The guides include: Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs), Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), Surge Protective Devices (SPDs), Cord Extension Sets, fixed installation USB chargers, and Thermal Overload Relays.
Ralph Goebel, Head of Certification at Siemens and Convenor of MSSI Electrical said: “We are pleased to be proactively supporting the electrical installation industry to ensure safe and compliant products with the launch of these MSSI Electrical Product Safety Guides.”
The EU Commission is also driving to ensure product compliance throughout the EU Single Market, and, on 20 June 2019, published Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 of the European Parliament and of the Council, for market surveillance and compliance of products. This Regulation aims at improving the functioning of the internal market by strengthening the market surveillance of products covered by the European Union Harmonisation Legislation.
Both Mr. Petar Parushev, and Ms. Vanessa Polillo supported the proactive steps taken by MSSI Electrical towards helping the industry to work together for safe and compliant electrical products throughout Europe.
Ralph Goebel went on to say: “Everyone has a role to play in ensuring the safety of products placed on the EU market. By providing these practical guidelines we aim to contribute to a safer European market for electrical products and do our bit towards Article 9 of the market surveillance regulation.”
